Courthouse News & Announcements

Courthouse News - March 7, 2005

UNION COUNTY RECORDER - Paula White, 641-782-1725.

Boats in Iowa renew by April 30, 2005 and owners will need to supply length, width and hull ID#, if it isn’t already on your registration.  All boats must be current before they can be transferred to a new owner.

A new format will be offered for the Spring Hunter Course.  Participants can log onto the DNR website and take the classroom course with the shooting part held April 23 at the Three Mile Lake Lodge. Participants will need to complete each quiz, get 100% correct and bring a printed copy to the shooting event. There will be a pre-test given on the 23rd before the shooting section.  If this system proves workable, State Conservation Officer Marc Roberg will offer additional Hunter Safety Courses.  Log onto www.iowadnr.com and go to the Education Heading.  For additional information and to pre-registration, please contact this office or Marc at 641-347-8843.

UNION COUNTY AUDITOR - Sandy Hysell,  782-1701.

All the county offices except the Auditor’s Office will close at 12:00 p.m. on March 25, 2005 to observe Good Friday.  The Auditor’s office will remain open until 5:00 p.m. for Absentee Voting for the March 29, 2005 Local Sales and Service Tax Election.   The Office is currently accepting absentee requests and the ballot will be ready March 7, 2005.  The Public Notice and Official Ballot will be published in the Creston News Advertiser on March 16, 2005 and in the Afton Star on March 17, 2005.  The last day to register to vote is March 18, 2005 and the office will be open until 5:00 p.m.

The Fiscal Year 2005-2006 budget will be certified to the State by March 15, 2005.  As a reminder, the County Townships need to be presenting their budgets to our office, in order to have the public hearing before the March 15, 2004 deadline.

UNION COUNTY TREASURER - Linda Marley  782-1710.
Drivers License (hours 8:30-4:00)

Second half real estate and mobile home taxes are due by March 31, 2005.  There are several options to pay your taxes.  You may come into our office, pay online at www.iowatreasurers.org , mail your payment as long as it gets a postmark of March 31 or before, or use the drop box located in the hall outside our windows.  Please remember to include the stubs from the statements we sent you last fall.  It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to see that you have all of your parcels paid.

The Elderly/Disabled property tax credit forms are available in our office.  Don’t forget to ask for yours when paying your second half taxes.  The forms are due back in our office by June 1, 2005 to be applied to the 2005-2006 taxes.

The new vehicle registration receipts that you are to carry in your vehicle are now a full 8 x 11 sheet of paper. We’ve had several people throw theirs away and have to pay $3.00 for a duplicate because they were looking for the half sheet registrations that we used to have.

Processing titles and registrations on the new auto system is getting better everyday.  We are still finding some conversions issues that slow us down but overall it’s going well.  Please be sure to bring in your renewal notice, registration or at the very least your plate numbers when renewing.  This will speed of the process.  You can still renew your tags at www.getyourtags.com .  You will need the PIN number printed on the renewal notice that is sent to you the month prior to your vehicle being due.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR-Gene Haner - 782-1735.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.

If you have made any building changes, please notify this office.
Family Farm Credit is now a one-time sign up and can be signed at any time for qualifying ground.
