A Hunter Safety course will be held March 25 & 26 in Union County. This is open to ages 12 & older at no fee. You may pre-register at this office.
The Union County Website is up and running. Please log onto www.unioncountyiowa.org. Forms are available to request a vital record, marriage application, passport application or boat bill of sale form.
Spring Turkey tags for both paid and landowner/tenant are on sale.
Passport fees are now $97.00 for ages 16 & older and $82.00 for ages 15 & under. Please apply early to avoid expedite fees. Processing times (6-8 weeks) are longer due to the number of passport requests and the partial operation of the New Orleans agency. For questions log onto: travel.state.gov.
Effective July 1, 2005 the law changed concerning boat sales. Casual sales (sales between individuals) are now subject to Iowa Sales Tax and depending on the point of delivery, local option tax. You will now need a Bill of Sale from the seller, current registration and a title if the boat is 17’ or longer.

The Auditor’s Office is busy working on Fiscal Year 2006/07 budgets. We are getting ready to receive the new election equipment and learning the new voter registration system.
The Primary Election is June 6, 2006. People interested in running for an office in the 2006 Primary Election can pick up the Candidate packets at the Auditor’s Office or you can go on line at http://sos.state.ia.us/elections/electioninfo/PrimaryElections.html to get the same information. The county offices that are on the ballot for 2006 are Supervisor District #1, Supervisor District #2, Supervisor District #5, Treasurer, Recorder, and Attorney. The first day to file nomination papers for county offices is March 6, 2006 and the last day is March 29, 2006.

The 2nd half property taxes are due by March 31. Payments have already started coming in. Please be sure to include your payment stubs from the statement you received last fall to insure your payment is applied to the correct parcel. If you are mailing your payment on Friday, March 31st, be sure that you mail early enough to receive a March postmark. You may also pay online at www.iowatreasurers.org until midnight without any penalty. The online payment engine is used all across the state, so it may be slow that last couple of days.
February vehicles renewals are also due by March 31st You may also pay those online at www.getyourtags.com. In order to pay online, your vehicle must be currently licensed and you must have received a renewal notice with a PIN number on it.
The last week of March is also spring break week for the schools. If you are a minor and plan to get a Driver License permit or upgrade your license, you will need a parent to sign the parental consent form. You may pick up the form and take it home to be signed but it does require the signature to be notarized. The driver license station is open from 8:30a.m. to 4p.m. Monday through Friday. No written tests will be given out after 3:45p.m. Please allow plenty of time for taking the test and having the permit issued.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.
The qualification for any honorably discharged member of the United Armed Forces has been changed to be eligible for the military exemption on your property taxes. Now if you have served three or more consecutive years of service in the armed forces irregardless of when you served you are now eligible for a Military Exemption or if you have served for twenty years in the Reserves or the National Guard you are also eligible for the military credit. What is required to sign for this credit is either a DD-214 from the regular service or a complete listing of years served from the Guard or Reserve.
You are also required to inform this office if you have removed or built any new buildings or dwellings or if you have remodeled any buildings or dwellings.
Family Farm Credit is now a one-time sign up and can be signed at any time for qualifying owners.
