Courthouse News & Announcements

Courthouse News - September 1, 2006

UNION COUNTY RECORDER, Paula White, 641-782-1725.

Deer & Turkey tags are now available. Major changes include the new registration process for Landowners/Tenants and the requirement for every hunter to call in their kill by midnight of the day after the kill. Please stop by for additional information.

Snowmobile and ATV owners with regular paid registrations can now renew. We will send out renewal notices during the next month. The deadline for renewal is December 31.

Boaters Take Note: last year the law changed concerning boat sales. Casual sales (sales between individuals) are now subject to Iowa Sales Tax and depending on the point of delivery, local option tax. Now you need a Bill of Sale from the seller, current registration (expire 4/07) and a title if the boat is 17’ or longer.

Passport fees are now $97.00 for ages 16 & older and $82.00 for ages 15 & under. Please apply early to avoid expedite fees. Processing times (6-8 weeks) are longer due to the number of passport requests and the partial operation of the New Orleans agency. For questions log onto: travel.state.gov.

The Union County Website is up and running. Please log onto www.unioncountyiowa.org. Forms are available to request a vital record, marriage application, passport application or boat bill of sale form.

UNION COUNTY TREASURER, Linda Marley, 641-782-1710.
Drivers License (hours 8:30-4:00)

The first half property tax is due by September 30th.  The tax statements were mailed on September 23rd.  If you own a property and did not receive a notice please notify our office.  It is the taxpayers responsibility to be sure they have any and all their receipts, so be sure to check each receipt carefully.  Payments may be brought into the office, sent by mail or paid online @www.iowatreasurers.org.  Be sure when mailing or bringing tax payments into the office to include the payments stubs at the top of the statements.  This helps to insure the payment is applied to the proper parcel.

City of Creston residents will notice in the tax comparison at the bottom of the receipt a category that says other.  Last year the City of Creston had a debt service levy which they aren’t taxing for this year.  The other category shows zero for this year and an amount for last year, which was the debt service levy.  Due to there being no levy for Creston debt service, the computer didn’t know how to identify this and posted it as other.  If you have last years tax statement, you will see that the Creston Corp Debt Service amount is listed there and that is the same amount showing in the other category on the 2004 taxes on this year’s statement.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR, Gene Haner, 641-782-1735.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.
