Courthouse News & Announcements

Courthouse News - December 6, 2006

UNION COUNTY RECORDER, Paula White, 641-782-1725.

2007 Hunting and Fishing licenses go on sale December 15.

Snowmobile and ATV owners with regular paid registrations can now renew. You can renew by mail or in person. Registrations will expire December 31, 2006.

Boaters Take Note: last year the law changed concerning boat sales. Casual sales (sales between individuals) are now subject to Iowa Sales Tax and depending on the point of delivery, local option tax. Now you need a Bill of Sale from the seller, current registration (expire 4/07) and a title if the boat is 17’ or longer.

Passport fees are now $97.00 for ages 16 & older and $82.00 for ages 15 & under. Please apply early to avoid expedite fees. Processing times (6-8 weeks) are longer due to the number of passport requests and the partial operation of the New Orleans agency. For questions log onto: travel.state.gov.

The Union County Website is up and running. Please log onto www.unioncountyiowa.org <http://www.unioncountyiowa.org/> . Forms are available to request a vital record, marriage application, passport application or boat bill of sale form.

UNION COUNTY AUDITOR, Sandy Hysell, 641-782-1701.

The Auditor’s Office is preparing for the end of the year and starting the Real Estate valuations. We are also working on end of the month reports, end of the year reports, and soon we will be working on W-2s.

The County Offices will be closed on December 25, 2006 and December 26, 2006 to observe the Christmas Holiday and January 1, 2007 to observe New Year’s Day.

UNION COUNTY TREASURER, Linda Marley, 641-782-1710.
Drivers License (hours 8:30-4:00)

Trucks that are registered for 6 ton or more are due for renewal before January 31, 2007. There was an error in the due date on some of the notices that went out. If you register your truck or truck-tractor for 28 ton or more, you will need to show us the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax form 2290 prior to renewing.

Our office will be closed on Monday December 25th and Tuesday December 26th for the Christmas Holiday. We will also be closed Monday January 1st, 2007.

With school out for Christmas break, we expect to see a lot of students wanting to either get their drivers permit or upgrade their license. Just a reminder, that if you are under 18, you will need a parent to sign the parental consent form before you will be able to test or upgrade your license. If you are testing for an instruction permit, you will need to have a state or county issued certified birth certificate and a Social Security card also.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR, Gene Haner, 641-782-1735.

All Union County residents who have purchased a home and moved should stop in and sign a New Homestead and Military Exemption, if eligible.

The qualification for any honorably discharged member of the United Armed Forces has been changed to be eligible for the military exemption on your property taxes. Now if you have served eighteen months or more in the armed forces irregardless of when you served, you are now eligible for a Military Exemption or if you have served for twenty years in the Reserves or the National Guard you are also eligible for the military credit. What is required to sign for this credit is either a DD-214 from the regular service or a complete listing of years served from the Guard or Reserve.

You are also required to inform this office if you have removed or built any new buildings or dwellings or if you have remodeled any buildings or dwellings.

Family Farm Credit is now a one-time sign up and can be signed at any time for qualifying owners.
