UNION COUNTY TREASURER - Linda Marley,641-782-1710.
Drivers License (hours 8:30-4:00).
A newly designed website was launched on December 1st. The web address is still the same. www.iowatreasurers.org. If you have this web address saved in your favorites, you’ll need to delete it and resave it. The new website has decreased the number of steps necessary to make an online payment for tax and tags. The service delivery fee for using an e-check has been decreased from $2.00 to $.40 per transaction. The fee for paying by credit card is still 2% of the total dollar transaction plus $1.50 for tax payments. Paying for auto renewals with a credit card online will now have a flat fee of $5.50 no matter how many vehicles you renew.
Another benefit of the new website is the ability to pay taxes in more than one county in the same transaction.
Be sure to logon and check out the new website. Hopefully, you will find the redesign more user friendly.
Trucks licensed for 6 ton or more are due before January 31st, 2008. If you register your truck for over 28 ton, you need to be sure to have your Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax form available for us to see when renewing. This is also the time of the year that you can lower your truck tonnage if you are not using it during the first half of the year. If you should need to raise the tonnage prior to July 1, you will be charged the difference between what you have already paid and the higher tonnage fee. There is no prorating of the fee until after July 1.
Our office will be closed in observance of Christmas on Monday December 24th and Tuesday December 25.

UNION COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS-Mike King, Chairperson, Tom McCann, Vice-chair,
Bob Brown, Don Irelan, Ron Riley782-1720
Now is the time of year in which the preparation of the Union County Budget begins. The Board of Supervisors would like to help in understanding how the tax dollars are being used. This is the first of a series that will be published monthly.
One of the largest budgets in Union County is Mental Health. Over half of the money spent for Mental Health in Union County is funded through Union County property tax dollars. The remaining monies come from state allocations with a small portion coming from the federal government. The Fiscal Year 08 (July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008) mental health budget was certified at $1,389,354.
Out of this budget Union County funds a number of services, either in part or in whole, for persons with Mental Retardation, Serious and Persistent Mental Illness, and Developmental Disabilities. Examples of services which are funded include: Residential Services, Work Activity, Supported Employment, Supported Community Living, Case Management and hospitalizations related to mental health. The average cost, for Union County with local dollars, per consumer receiving the above described services in FY07 was: $12,432 for persons with Mental Retardation; $7,330 for persons with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness; and $27,036 for persons with Developmental Disabilities.
Union County has managed to continue to fund our consumers without cutting services.
