UNION COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS-Mike King, Chairperson, Ron Riley, Vice-chair, Bob Brown, Don Irelan, Tom McCann—782-1720

On October 1, 2007 the Prairie Solid Waste Agency landfill transitioned to the Prairie Solid Waste Agency transfer station.  The new 5490 square foot transfer station is located at the sight of the former landfill.

The transfer station handles approximately 20,000 ton of solid waste per year while serving 24,000 residents in Adams, Taylor, and Union Counties.  Facility users deposit their waste into one of three Transtors, which are stainless steel holding bins.  The containers operate on hydraulics that then tip into the transfer trailers for removal.  Two of the Transtors are for commercial dumping and one of the Transtors is for non-commercial dumping.  When the trailers are filled they are then transferred to Metro Park East Landfill in Mitchellville, Iowa.  An average of three to four loads of waste is taken to Metro Park daily, Monday through Friday.

The transfer station operations and hauling are contracted by Brian Gay Construction of Villisca, Iowa. The Prairie Solid Waste Agency has one full-time employee, the office manager, and five part-time employees.  The part-time employees include two scale people, two who work at the Regional collection center and one who is a demanufacturer. Other services provided by Prairie Solid Waste Agency are household hazard waste disposal, tire recycling, electronic recycling, and freon and non-freon appliance disposal.

Prairie Solid Waste Agency transfer station is in full operation and it is their intent to meet the area’s long term waste disposal needs. Ron Riley is the Landfill county rep.
