UNION COUNTY AUDITOR - Sandy Hysell, 641-782-1701.
Our office is busy getting ready for the School Election, which will be held on September 9th, 2008. The polls will open at 12:00p.m. and close at 8:00p.m. We will be using the New Voting equipment. You will receive a paper ballot when you sign in to vote. You will need to fill in the oval of the candidate/candidates of your choice. You will then feed the ballot through the ballot scanner to tabulate your vote. There will also be available an Auto Marking device. This is for the voter who may need assistance in marking their ballots. You will feed the ballot thru the Auto Mark. It will display the ballot on a touch screen. With a stylist, you tap on the candidate/candidates of your choice (if needed a head set/and or a touch pad are also available for the voter that maybe visually impaired). Once you have told the machine how you want to vote, it will bring you to a summary screen so you can confirm your choices, the Auto Mark will mark you ballot accordingly. The Auto Mark does take awhile to mark the ballot and the bigger the ballot, the longer the time. Once the Auto Mark gives you the ballot back, you will then feed the ballot through the scanner to tabulate your vote.
The General Election absentee ballot requests that we have already received will be mailed out September 25th, and you may come to the office anytime after that and vote absentee during our regular office hours.
If you have any questions about the new voting equipment or the same day registration/voting, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

The Union County Board of Supervisors has been busy with the many boards we serve on. This month we would like to let the taxpayers know how your ELECTED OFFICALS, DEPARTMENT HEADS, AND ALL COUNTY EMPLOYEES WORKED HARD TO KEEP YOUR TAX DOLLAR IN CHECK DURING THE 2007-08 BUDGET YEAR WE JUST COMPLETED ON JUNE 30, 2008. THE LARGEST and most DIFFICULT WAS THE JOB Sheriff Piel’s DEPT. WHO HELD THE LINE AND RETURNED $14,401.00 TO THE GENERAL Fund AFTER his jail had a major medical bill (OVER $40000). Ricks’ staff all worked hard to stay in and under budget--thanks to all of you. We as a Board had a large budget cost that we dealt with in KENT clean-up area over $50,000. There again we as a team with the employees help held the line on the budgets .THE BOARD ASKED AND THEY ALL HELPED. WHAT A GREAT TEAM EFFORT. CARRYOVERS THAT WENT BACK TO THE GENERAL FUND: AUDITORS OFFICE $26079.11, TREASURES $ 9033.29, COUNTY ATTORNEY $4504.26, CONSERVATION, $16603.58, BOARD OF HEALTH $14245.58, RECORDER $407.63, VETRANS $6710.09, DHS, DISTRICT COURT AND GENERAL SERVICES-BUILDING AND GROUNDS $106,324.74. UNION COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - JO DUCKWORTH, 641-782-1622.
The Union County Emergency Management Agency urges anyone who has not applied for FEMA assistance from the June rains and tornados to do so as soon as possible. Also, if you registered and immediately got a denial letter for benefits, chances are the denial was based on lack of paperwork, such as insurance information (what they paid and did not), lack of repair estimates for the damages, or lack of other information to properly process your claim. Don’t get discouraged! File an appeal instead. This is a fairly simple process, you can fax the additional information to FEMA and then the process goes rather quickly, sometimes in as little as a week to ten days. If you need assistance doing this, please contact me, I will help you with the process. The deadline for registering with FEMA is September 29, so don’t delay if you had damages.
Also, another storm-related reminder if you had basement flooding, that reached your furnace, please have it checked by a professional contractor before using it this fall. We all know how quickly the weather can change, so be safe and schedule an appointment as soon as possible with the contractor of your choice.
September is Preparedness month. If you do not have a family disaster plan or a continuity of business plan in place, this would be a great time to do it. For more information on Preparedness access the FEMA website at www.fema.gov or www.bereadyia.org developed by Iowa’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division. If you need further assistance, please contact Union County Emergency Management.
CodeRED© contracts are being finalized. The Union County Board of Supervisors and Union County Emergency Management (through a grant) has funded the project. CodeRED©will allow us to phone you and advise you of any emergency messages. It will also allow us to make the messages area specific. Watch for the CodeRED public campaign!
