February is the month we remind all of those special to us how much we care for them and with the economy as tight as it is, I am sure some of you are rethinking the “dinner, show, roses, and candy” thing. Let me give you some ideas that will truly show them you care at little or no cost, except your time and commitment.
#1: Register them for CodeRED alerts at www.unioncountyiowa.org it just takes a minute or two of your time and will ensure they receive emergency alerts. If you don’t have internet access, give Emergency Management a call at 641-782-1622 or visit the library for computer access.
#2: Develop an emergency preparedness plan. Guidelines can be found at www.ready.gov or develop your plan on-line at http://ready.adcouncil.org/beprepared/. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so plan how you will contact one another and review what you will do in different situations.
#3: Prepare a disaster kit guidelines can be found at www.ready.gov
#4: Don’t forget your pets. They will also need a to-go kit if you need to shelter elsewhere.
A storm spotter training, co-sponsored by the National Weather Service, Creston FD, and Union County Emergency Management, is scheduled for March 3 at 6:30 PM with the Des Moines National Weather Service.
