Frequently Asked Questions from Union County Treasurer:

Real Estate Taxes:

I just purchased this property and I am now being told that I am responsible for the full year taxes. How can this be?

In a typical real estate transaction, taxes are prorated and the buyer is given credit for the seller’s portion. You should look at your settlement statement provided to you at the closing to confirm this or contact the realtor or attorney who handled the transaction for you.

Real estate taxes are always a year behind. For instance: the taxes due in September cover the time period from July 1 - December 31st of the previous year.

What happens if my taxes are not paid by the due date?

On the first day of each month, late interest at the rate of 1.5% (rounded to the nearest dollar, with a $1.00 minimum per parcel) will be added to the unpaid balance of your property taxes. If your taxes remain unpaid, they could be subject to tax sale. If sold at tax sale and if the tax lien is not redeemed within the time specified by Iowa law, the tax sale certificate holder may initiate foreclosure proceedings.

Motor Vehicle:

I have lost my validation sticker.  Where do I go to obtain a new one?

You can come to your County Treasurer’s Office to receive a new validation sticker.  If you have your current registration, you must bring it with you.

I have lost one of my license plates.  Where do I go to get a replacement plate?

You can receive a replacement set of plates at our office. You will need to bring with you your current registration and your remaining plate that is on your vehicle and pay the applicable fees.  The cost for the replacement set of plates will be $5.00

Our office provides drivers licenses issuance between the hours of 8:30- 4, Monday thru Friday.  Drive tests require an appointment and are scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays upon the completion of all necessary written tests.  Written testing can be done Monday thru Friday between 8:30-3:30.

We now accept debit and credit cards in the office for tax payments and motor vehicle transactions, convenience fee does apply.

UNION COUNTY ASSESSOR - Gene Haner, 641-782-1735.

Now if you have served eighteen months or more in the armed forces irregardless of when you served, you are now eligible for a Military Exemption or if you have served for twenty years in the Reserves or the National Guard you are also eligible for the military credit. What is required to sign for this credit is either a DD-214 from the regular service or a complete listing of years served from the Guard or Reserve.

You are also required to inform this office if you have removed or built any new buildings or dwellings or if you have remodeled any buildings or dwellings.

UNION COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS - Mike King, Chairperson, Ron Riley, Vice-chair, Bob Brown, Bob Jansen, Tom McCann—641-782-1720.

UNION COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - JO DUCKWORTH, 641-782-1622.

Winter is fast approaching and it is a good time to begin preparing for the weather that goes with it.   Have your furnace and fireplaces checked and cleaned.  Be cautious using candles and never leave one burning unattended.  Space heaters should not be placed near flammable materials, sleeping persons,  or used in conjunction with an extension cord.  They should also be shut off at night.  Have generators professionally installed, checked,  and only operate them outside your home.  When travelling, keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle.  Have a charger for your cell phone and let your family know your route of travel.  For more winter safety tips, see the website at www.unioncountiowa.org/emergency

The end of October marked the end of the Unmet Needs Grant Program.  The Southwest Iowa Long Term Recovery Committee assisted approximately 40 Union County Families with nearly $80,000 in grants.  This money went to replace personal property, home repairs, and uncovered medical expenses during the Spring of 2008 disaster.   Several families were also referred to Jumpstart, due to the large amounts of home damage.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)Volunteer Training will begin in January.  There will be several announcements made when the classes are set up.  They will focus on basic skills needed to keep you and your family safe during a disaster, then how to assist your neighbors, and then widening to skills to assist other first responders during times of disaster.  If you would like more information contact my office or visit the website.   CERT is for anyone who has a desire to help.   Union County has always been a great community where neighbors help neighbors, so CERT is for you!
