BUYING A BOAT?
Sales of boats and other watercraft in Iowa are subject to the state sales tax rate of 6 percent and local option taxes, if any. According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, this applies to sales by individuals as well as dealers as of July 1, 2005.
Anyone purchasing a boat from an individual should obtain a receipt that shows the cost of the boat and the cost of the trailer if one was purchased with the boat. The buyer will then pay the sales tax on the cost of the boat to the county recorder and the 6 percent motor vehicle use tax on the cost of the trailer to the county treasurer when the boat is registered. Also effective July 1, 2009 this tax will include ATV and Snowmobile casual sales.
